“What you see is a major part of what you know, and visual literacy can help us to see what we see and know what we know.”
Donis A. Dondis
This quote was in our PowerPoint Presentation about Visual Literacy and made me realize how important visual devices are to the learning process. In the visual example provided my interpretation is that it is a chart of information on how Americans are eating too much protein. Overall, I would give the visual a grade of C+. As far as perception is concerned the visual has adequate figure/ground, but the design would be better if it was more grounded with a better title. Also, the hierarchy is not well established because the numbers range from 600 million to 8 billion, 127, and 20 billion. The visual also does not use Gestalt practices very well because none of the pictures are drawing your eye to the chart. It does have good proximity where the image of the chicken is near the entry about how many chickens are raised for consumption per year.
Not much action is employed in the visual. There is not much contrast between the charts. They go from like color to like color. I would use bolder, more contrasting colors. There is no use of repetition. The alignment of the information in the charts is a good action that was used. The proximity with the food icon and the information was good and made the chart more interesting. Overall, the action was good in some areas and needed help in others.
The tools used in the visual were mediocre. A different type could make the information easier to read. Also, the title needs to be bolder. The color needs to be more vivid and contrast with the next chart. I like the space of the visual and would keep it as it is. The shape of the bucket of chicken and hot dog look like they have been disproportionably shaped. The depth is suitable for the most part. The title needs to be larger. The visual does not have much texture to it either. Like perception and action, the tools were used well in some areas and not as well in others. Visual Literacy is so important in education and with using some knowledge about perception, actions, and tools this visual can be reconfigured to be a great tool in the classroom.
